You are invited to join us Saturday December 16th for our Guests and Members observing night at our observatory. Weather permitting, we will have several telescopes set up for you to enjoy the bright stars of the winter sky. Some of our members will have telescope outside for viewing. You will also have an opportunity to visit the telescope in our observatory dome. When approaching a telescope ask the owner if they are willing to share the views.
On clear winter nights the temperature drops off quickly after dark in rural areas. Dress in layers. A warm coat, cap and gloves are recommended. Your feet will appreciate Warm Closed toed shoes. Bring along something to drink and maybe a light energy snack. We do have a restroom and a classroom area to warm up a bit and visit.
Jupiter and its moons along with Saturn and its rings will be popular sites during the evening. The planet Uranus is also nearby. The bright winter constellations of Taurus and Orion are rising in the east. On this night a 4 day old crescent moon will be visible about 13 degrees below Saturn. As an added bonus you may also see a few meteors streak across the sky from the Geminid Meteor shower that peaked in the middle of the week.
PLEASE NOTE: If adverse weather is nearby, we may cancel or close earlier.
