Friday October 18, 2024 - 7:00 PM - Astronomy Club meeting
105 E B St Jenks, OK see map link below
Each Month during the school year our club holds a general meeting open to both our members and guests. We meet in the spacious Jenks High School Planetarium which has ample space for social distancing. At our meetings you can enjoy presentations topics such as current space exploration, astronomical events and on occasion we get the opportunity to preview the latest planetarium production the students are working on. You also can learn more about past, present, and future club events and activities.
This is a great opportunity for our members and guests to share their enthusiasm for astronomy and learn from each other. We hope to see you there!
This has been a busy autumn under the stars. On Sept 17 we enjoyed a partial eclipse of the moon. Many of our members spent a week at the Okie-Tex at the Okie-Tex Star Party enjoying some of the darkest skies on the planet. The Sun is at its maximum its sunspot activity. The sun has produced four strong X Class solar flares Oct 1, 3 7, 9 which have produced CME ( coronal mass eruptions ) directed toward earth. So keep an eye on https://spaceweather.com/ for aurora activity on Earth. Bright Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinshan-ATLAS) will pass closest to the earth on Oct 12. Astronomers in the southern hemisphere have been posting images of it in their predawn skies. It will soon be visible in our evening skies and should be visible in binoculars and telescopes for a few weeks. So come join us for our program to find out more.
Note to our membership - we will also be having officer and board candidate elections and a couple of other items of club business. See the candidates in our October newsletter. Also Be sure to make your reservations for our Nov. 9th annual club dinner.
The new 2025 Astronomy wall calendars will be available for purchase for $12 each while supplies last at the meeting while supplies last.
NOTE: If Jenks School System is closed due to weather the event will be cancelled.
